Closing the “Valley of Death” Gap in Carbon Capture Technology

Revolutionizing Carbon Capture Technologies with PrISMa: A Game-Changing Platform Developed by EPFL, Heriot-Watt University, and ETH Zurich

Scientists at EPFL, Heriot-Watt University, and ETH Zurich have developed a groundbreaking platform called PrISMa that is set to revolutionize carbon capture technologies. This innovative tool combines advanced simulations and machine learning to streamline the development of top-performing materials for carbon capture, while also taking into account the perspectives of diverse stakeholders early in the research process.

The need to address climate change and reduce CO₂ emissions has never been more urgent, with carbon capture technologies emerging as a promising solution. However, the “Valley of Death” between research and practical implementation has hindered progress in this field. PrISMa aims to bridge this gap by integrating materials science, process design, techno-economics, and life-cycle assessment from the outset.

By evaluating four Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or “layers” – materials, process, techno-economic analysis, and life-cycle assessment – PrISMa can predict the performance of new materials and assess the economic and environmental viability of carbon capture solutions. This comprehensive approach sets PrISMa apart as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.

The platform has been tested on over sixty real-world case studies, demonstrating its ability to identify the most effective and sustainable solutions for capturing CO₂. By providing engineers, chemists, environmental managers, and investors with invaluable insights, PrISMa enables more informed decision-making and accelerates the development of carbon capture technologies.

One of the key features of PrISMa is its ability to predict material performance using advanced simulations and machine learning. This approach not only accelerates the discovery of top-performing materials but also minimizes the environmental impacts of carbon capture processes.

With the potential to revolutionize the discovery of materials for carbon capture, PrISMa offers a comprehensive solution to the challenges facing this critical field. By uniting stakeholders early in the research process and providing a thorough evaluation of materials and processes, PrISMa is paving the way for more effective and sustainable carbon capture solutions.
