Exploring Collaboration in Developing the Hydrogen Economy: Washington State and British Columbia Study
Representatives from Washington state and British Columbia are teaming up to explore the potential for collaboration in developing and expanding the hydrogen economy in their regions. This groundbreaking study, led by the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER), the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation’s Clean Energy Major Projects Office (CEMPO), and the Washington State Department of Commerce, aims to identify opportunities within the Pacific Northwest Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (PNWH2).
The PNWH2 initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, spans across Washington, Oregon, and Montana and has been awarded up to $1 billion over eight years. Both Washington and British Columbia recognize the importance of investing in robust hydrogen economies to achieve their clean energy goals.
B.C. Premier David Eby emphasized the potential for the Pacific Northwest to lead in building hydrogen infrastructure, creating jobs, reducing emissions, and fostering trade opportunities across the region. Washington State Commerce Director Mike Fong echoed this sentiment, highlighting the commitment to advancing green electrolytic hydrogen and renewable fuels in the transition to a net-zero economy.
Deloitte has been contracted to lead a team of experts in conducting the study, with the goal of increasing adoption and knowledge of hydrogen among industry stakeholders in the Pacific Northwest. The study, supported by funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act and the Province of British Columbia, is expected to play a crucial role in advancing policy actions and driving the growth of the hydrogen sector in both jurisdictions.
With Washington poised to become a leader in green hydrogen economy, this collaborative effort between Washington state and British Columbia sets the stage for significant advancements in clean energy technology and infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest.
